Funk music performer Jimmy Castor dies
Jimmy Castor, a NY funk and soul saxophonist, singer and songwriter whose tune "It Is Simply Begun" morphed over 4 decades into an anthem for decades of stylish-hoppers and mainstream musical functions, died Monday of apparent heart failure inside a Vegas hospital. He was 71. Castor had gone through quadruple bypass surgery suffering cardiac arrest in November.Castor's music, including another 1972 hit, "Troglodyte," spoke by itself in 1000's of riffs and samples by groups like N.W.A., the two Live Crew, Kanye, Ice Cube and Mos Def, in addition to functions like the Spice Women, Christina Aguilera and Madonna.His boy, Jimmy Castor Junior., a filmmaker from Redondo Beach, Calif., told the Connected Press he's seen instant recognition 100s of occasions in the first sax guitar chords of "It Is Simply Begun" -- before the lyrics begin.
